Looking Down

By Mireille Yael Tanzil, Secondary 3 Courage

The scintillating bright and glowing sun shone right across void black eyes. I slowly looked down and took a few steps towards the glazed, metallic railing. My tanned fingers and palm gripped the barriers that prevented me from falling the great height into the neon-lit roads of cars and people. As I gazed down the transparent floor, my heart pounded as if it wanted to escape.

I turned my head right and let my eyes catch the coastal beauty. My eyes spotted sparrows that seemed as tiny as newborn birds, soaring high. Shades of blue that sank darker and brighter like the depths of a sea reflect the gleaming sunlight which dissolved in the hard, rocky sands. Ripples of waves veiling each other with the strong wind blowing across my face. Vibrant and contrasting pink hues of stunning flowerets marinated the air with such a delicate yet fragrance that explained the charm of nature.Itself was just exquisite.

I gradually turned my head to the left side which is the urban side of the city packet with buildings. Lamp posts were lit up the city in lines, to hide the metropolitan chaos and nightlife below. Endless buildings grew larger and larger, enveloping as I walked between its alleyways. The sun peacefully set while the moon steadily rose. Time slipped by and the bright stars studded the entire cityscape like how mist covered the mountains.

Like a child afraid of falling, I tiptoed along the glass panels back into an approaching elevator. As it descended, my soul, which had been stuck between two worlds, was liberated. The two silver doors creaked open, and I traveled back by the MRT. I looked down to a familiar rugged doormat, tattered but warm under the yellow porch light. As I stepped inside, I let out a huge sigh and collapsed onto my pleasant and cozy bed, sinking into my own small world called home.
